Europeans 2010

This years European Championships saw the ladies have a mixture of old and new players. Scotland had two new lady Internationalists in the team of five. The team from left to right: Karin Burt, Emma Raeburn (New), Lyndsay McKellar, Claire McEwan and Jodie Holt (New).

The ladies got off to a rocky start but grew in confidence with every match, with some close score lines going against us, like the 10-5 against the very experienced World and European Champions England, despite Karin Burt’s best efforts with a 3 frames from 3. England have players like Barbara Taylor (Runner up in the 2008 World Championships, and former Home Internationalist winner) and Carly Smith (2009 European Champion). Scotland Ladies 10-5 defeats to Wales twice, who have players to the strength of Sharon Dickson (2008 World Masters Champion), Collette Henriksen (Former World Champion) mixed with players to the calibre of former world team player Mandy Palmer. Although Scotland ladies had a few close defeats we also had some good wins beating France in both of there matches. In the first match against France we ran into an early 4-1 lead, which we carried on winning the 2nd and 3rd sets 3-2, coming out as 10-5 victors. All ladies performed well with newcomer Emma Raeburn and veteran Lyndsay McKellar both winning all 3 of there frames.

In the Second game against France the ladies knew that if we won we would qualify for the semi finals, so the pressure was on. The ladies responded as well as the possibly could, running into a 4-1 lead in the first set that carried on by the same score line in the other two sets, leading Scotland to a 12-3 win. It was the other newcomer Jodie Holt’s time to shine with her first 3 from 3 in a Scotland waistcoat, along with the two experienced players Karin Burt and Lyndsay McKellar also winning 3 from 3.

In the group stages a special mention has to go to Karin Burt, who won 14 frames from 24 frames played, finishing in joint 7th place on the overall rankings of all the lady team players.

In the semi final Scotland Ladies had drawn England Ladies. In the first set Scotland Ladies had kept it tight going in one frame down at 3 frames to 2, with wins from Jodie Holt and Lyndsay McKellar. Lyndsay McKellar managed to make it all square by beating Barbara Taylor in her second frame. Unfortunately England showed there class by stepping up a gear and claiming the remaining 5 Frames.

I would also like to say a well done to Scotland Ladies two new Internationalists Emma Raeburn and Jodie Holt, both of which won 3 out of 3 against teams within this competition. Also Jodie deserves a special mention for winning 11 from her 24 frames, which was the second highest of all the Scotland ladies in the group stages.
